AUTHOR'S PICKS

Given Brighton’s coastal location, its history as a fishing village, and relatively recent promotion to city status, it is not surprising that a lot of its landmarks are concentrated along the seaside. For that reason, you might want to consider taking a long walk on the seafront, starting at Brighton Marina on to the west border of Hove, or vice versa. And to soak up the atmosphere of the city centre you could start by exploring the Lanes, move to the Royal Pavilion and its gardens, then to the North Laine area, on to Brighton Station, then walk down Queen’s Road to finish at Churchill Square. If you only have one day to visit, you can combine both walks to get a good sense of the city while taking scores of general snaps. It will be a tiring but satisfying day and you will get to see all of the most iconic stuff.

TRAVEL TIPS

If you decide to only concentrate on the city itself, there is no need to rent a car, it can in fact be impractical, as parking in quite costly, and especially in the summer or during major events finding a space can be a challenge, and heavy traffic can make you want to pull your hair out. Brighton has excellent public transport, mostly buses and to some degree trains, which will let you reach all of the urban locations without a hitch.

About The Author

Slawek Staszczuk

Slawek is a freelance photographer specialising in landscape, travel and architecture photography. Born in Gdynia, on the Baltic coast of Poland, he's been based in Brighton since 2007. Between 2009 and 2011 his, then novel, telephoto approach to photographing the South Downs around the city garnered him 8 commendations and a special award in three consecutive editions of Take-a-View LPOTY. Since then his style and original compositions have influenced many other local photographers. Although his interest in photography initially evolved from computer graphics, his approach to landscape photography is more conservative and he prefers to keep postproduction to a minimum, relying instead on getting the best input material in-camera. Slawek offers photography workshops, in small groups and individual, at a variety of locations in Sussex, London and further afield, and image editing tuition in Brighton. He regularly gives inspirational talks to camera clubs across South East England.
